Aikido is a modern, dynamic martial art. It began to be taught in Japan in the early 20th Century, and now has thousands of practitioners around the world.

South Manchester Aikido is a school that practises the traditional Aikikai-style of Aikido in a friendly environment.

Through Aikido you will learn the most effective self defence taught today, whilst also gaining fitness and confidence.

Aikido is a self-defence martial art that enables you to use your attacker’s weight and momentum to disable or throw them. Aikido practice can benefit everyone, men and woman, young and old, so physical fitness and strength are not required to start practicing.

South Manchester Aikido Club teaches the non-competitive “Traditional” form of Aikido and you will learn in a friendly, safe environment, practising with other students with the aim of helping one another improve.

South Manchester Aikido Club is a member of the British Birankai, which is one of only 5 organisations in the UK that is recognised internationally by Hombu Dojo, the Aikido headquarters in Japan. As such the club offers internationally recognised grades.

Instructors are Dan grades (black belts) and are fully certified and CRB checked.

What is Aikido?

Aikido is a modern, non-aggressive and non-violent Japanese Martial Art that uses an attacker’s weight and momentum to disable or throw them. It is therefore suitable for men and women of all ages.

Aikido is one of the most effective forms of self defence taught today. It does not use blocks or strikes, but uses natural body movement to neutralise the energy and strength of an attacker by blending with the incoming attack and redirecting the force with minimal effort, to finish with a pinning technique or a throw.

Aikido is not competitive and therefore men and women of all ages and levels of fitness can practise together with the aim of helping one another to improve. The use of strength in executing techniques is not required and is actively discouraged.

In addition to learning a martial art as a means of self defence, regular practice can improve health and fitness, help to develop a body with improved flexibility and reactions and help to gain confidence in everyday life.
